Whenever you step forth in a business endeavor, whether in markets or someone else, it’s likely that the concepts of the The Four Room Model of Change and the Five Stages of Competency will impact your success. When we begin working with a new partner, we seek to understand where the student is in relation to these two concepts. They are summarized below.
The Four Room Model of Change
The model was developed by the Swedish psychologist, Claes Janssen, in the late 60s and early 70s as part of his groundbreaking research on the dynamics of change. It assumes that for every endeavor, a person is in one of four rooms: Contentment, Denial, Confusion, and Renewal.
When asked, most would say that they are in the the renewal room. This is generous and also often naive. Most people who are looking to change and achieve something new are either in the denial room or confusion room. Which room are you in?
The Four Stages of Competency
The four stage model of skill acquisition was initially described as “Four Stages for Learning Any New Skill”, the theory was developed at Gordon Training International by its employee Noel Burch in the 1970s.
When we meet a new student, they are often in stage 1 or 2. They either don’t know what they don’t know (stage 1) or they know what they don’t know (stage 2). Our desire for those we partner with is to move them initially to stage 3 (a dependable approach that works) and eventually to stage 4 (the system becomes ingrained and intuitive).
We add to this model and suggest there is a 5th stage. That is when you have reached a level of competence where you can operate at level 4, but can speak the language and identify with the struggles of all the previous levels. We think this is a crucial ability for any mentor. Many competent traders have forgotten more than you know. The “curse of knowledge” prevents them from remembering the early stages and it ultimately will frustrate your development. The mentor who can operate at stage 5 is invaluable, because he or she can identify with where you are at and help support you with a plan to rapidly move you to your next stage.
